Neither Hokkaido's biting wind nor February's snow could dampen the passion for the poker tables. The JOPT 2026 Sapporo Series, held from February 20th to 23rd at the Sapporo Factory Hall, wrapped up after four days of intense competition. As the first regional series of the season, the event proved once again that the poker fervor is far from fading, filling the venue with players from all across the country.
Four Days, Not Three, and 31 Fierce Events
This Sapporo Series featured a packed schedule of 31 tournaments over four days. The opening day, the 20th, saw the Main Event Day 1A kick off alongside the NLH Warm-up and PLO Kick-off. The following day, the 21st, hosted Main Event Day 1B and the Good Game 1000, which ran late into the night. The schedule, encompassing a variety of formats from NLH and PLO to mixed games, was designed to ensure that players of any style could find a tournament suited to them.
A notable highlight was the debut of a special, Sapporo-exclusive trophy. Awarded to the winner of the NLH Crown Event, this blue stained-glass trophy served as a unique symbol of victory only attainable in Sapporo, further intensifying the atmosphere. This approach of adding distinct regional flavor to local series signifies an effort to cultivate a unique Sapporo poker culture beyond just hosting tournaments.
Players Gathered from Across the Nation, Using Sapporo as Their Stage
Another characteristic of the Sapporo Series is how players from diverse backgrounds secure seats in the Main Event through satellite qualifiers held at poker rooms nationwide, converging on the host city. Satellites were not only run in Sapporo but also in clubs in nearby Hokkaido cities like Asahikawa, opening up opportunities for players who might typically find it difficult to participate in major city tournaments. Consequently, this series saw a vibrant mix of players from all regions.
Participation was also made accessible through a wide range of payment options. Accepting cash, credit cards, e-money, Pokerweb coins, and USDT demonstrated JOPT's commitment to embracing a broader player base. Side events allowed for on-site registration without prior booking, lowering the entry barrier for newcomers to the JOPT experience.
A Tournament Completed with Sponsorship Support
Multiple companies participated as sponsors for individual events, enhancing the overall quality of the Sapporo Series. The Tag Team Turbo event, sponsored by the German miniature liqueur brand Kleiner, added a unique twist with its 2-player team format, while a special event in collaboration with the mineral water brand Nomu Shirika was also held. This diversification of sponsorships signals that JOPT is evolving beyond just a poker tournament into a festival that brings together the local community and businesses.
Next Up: Osaka, and Then the Grand Finals
Following the Sapporo Series, JOPT's next destination is Osaka. The Osaka Series will take place from March 18th to 22nd at the Dojima River Forum, followed by the Grand Finals from April 24th to May 6th at Tokyo Belle Salle Takadanobaba. Players are already gearing up, using their experiences and confidence gained in Sapporo as a springboard for the next stages. Poker fans are eagerly anticipating what stories the 2026 JOPT season will unfold, with their eyes already set on Osaka.
