The Taiwan Millions Tournament (TMT) 19 Main Event, held in Taipei, Taiwan last February, set a record that will go down in Asian poker history. A total of 8,066 participants registered entries for this tournament, setting a new milestone for the number of participants in a single poker tournament.
The TMT 19 Main Event was held over several Day 1 flights according to Taiwan local time. The tournament ran from early to mid-February, with a mid-level buy-in, attracting players of various skill levels. As a result, over 8,000 participants flocked to the event, exceeding the organizers' expectations and making it a great success.
Asia's Largest Field Formed
This tournament is significant as it formed the largest field among poker tournaments held in Asia. Considering that past major tournaments in Asia typically recorded between 2,000 and 4,000 participants, TMT 19's 8,066 participants is an overwhelming number, more than double that.
The tournament venue was held at a major poker arena in Taipei, Taiwan, and the sight of countless tables packed together was a spectacle in itself. Participants included not only local Taiwanese players, but also players from across Asia, including Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia.
Korean Players Also Perform Well
The performance of Korean players was also notable in this tournament. Korean players were seen reaching the top ranks in the Main Event's final results, demonstrating the increasing competitiveness of Korean players in the Asian poker scene.
Notably, among the 680 players who made it into the money (ITM), a significant number of Korean players cashed, proving their skill. Some players even advanced close to the final table, taking home substantial prizes.
Winner is a Local Taiwanese Player
After fierce competition, the championship trophy went to a local Taiwanese player. The winner displayed calm play at the final table, continued the game without an ICM deal until the end, and ultimately defeated their opponent in the heads-up to claim the championship.
The prize money for the winner is reportedly in the hundreds of millions of KRW, and the total prize pool for this tournament, proportional to the number of participants, ranked among the highest in Asian tournament history. A tournament official stated, “TMT 19 was a historic moment that showcased the potential of Asian poker,” adding, “We will continue to create a stage where even more players can participate.”
A Signal for the Growth of the Asian Poker Market
The great success of TMT 19 goes beyond just the popularity of a single tournament; it is interpreted as a signal that interest in poker is explosively increasing across Asia. After the COVID-19 pandemic, offline tournaments have fully recovered, and there is a trend of younger generations, accustomed to digital environments, flocking to live tournaments.
Taiwan, in particular, is one of the countries in Asia where poker culture is rapidly spreading. Several major series, including TMT, are regularly held, and tournaments like this one, attracting over 8,000 participants, are highly likely to become major hubs for future Asian poker tours.
Asian poker industry officials commented, “The record set by TMT 19 has become a new benchmark for other tournaments to surpass,” and predicted, “It will serve as an opportunity for more players from various Asian countries, including Korea, to challenge themselves on the international stage.”
